English Language Learners - ELL Services
Learning a second language can be very challenging. It is the belief of Cedar Springs Public Schools that each child is treated as an individual. Cultural differences are appreciated and respected. The ELL Program at Cedar Springs Public Schools is currently staffed with a program director and a part-time ELL paraprofessional. Support is given to students in grades K-12 on an individual pull-out or inclusive basis to work on academics and English language acquisition. Once the student has been assessed in oral, reading and writing proficiency, an immersion program is implemented for each student. The number of times a week we meet with the student depends on each student's needs. We help our English Language Learners assimilate into their new culture both socially and academically.
ELL staff will also work with the general education teachers of English Language Learners to adapt and modify curriculum and to reinforce classroom objectives. We work together to prioritize the general curriculum goals to be taught and utilize instructional tools such as building academic vocabulary and building background knowledge for academic achievement.Communications such as newsletters are available in both English and Spanish. Spanish translating services are also available to families at Parent/Teacher Conferences. Please contact your building secretary for more information.
